More than 90 percent of San Antonio’s 117,546 businesses are classified as small and over 98% of businesses in the USA have less than 20 employees. In San Antonio’s District 5, which has one of the highest poverty rates in the country, most employers are microbusinesses with 10 workers or fewer. With no large employer, the West Side’s economy runs on the entrepreneurial strength of a community of more than 5,000 small businesses, sole proprietors and independent contractors. Yet, only 5 percent of West Side microbusinesses received CARES Act business relief grants sponsored by the city of San Antonio and Bexar County, and less than 34 percent received federal relief funds through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Micro:SA as an authorized Small Business Administration (SBA) advisor/consultant in Federal Relief Funds, has assisted over 600 micro businesses operating as sole proprietors and independent contractors in the San Antonio and South Texas are with the PPP application process. The additional funding allocated to the Small Business Administration (SBA) for the reopening of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) for eligible first-time and second-time borrowers, provides economic relief to small businesses adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The SBA will be accepting applications through May 31, 2021 and will continue to process these applications for a month after that.
Preparedness for Texas’ devastating winter storm as early as February 9, 2021 started with a 40-second mention of the impending frigid weather from ERCOT and energy conservation and safety tips from CPS Energy. Days later, the storm that dropped snow and ice in the Lone Star State nearly paralyzed the electric grid, causing power and water outages for millions of Texans and San Antonio over a period of days. Residents on San Antonio’s West Side received a helping hand from a group of contractors and plumbers from California following the winter storm. The contractors and plumbers, who are part of the San Diego area group Kingdom Builders, are providing their services free of charge to area residents affected by the Texas winter storm. The group secured an interim license with the State of Texas for the group and was present in San Antonio from Feb. 26 through March 1 to help residents to address their plumbing needs and repairs. The effort was coordinated by Micro:SA building a pipeline of plumbers as they could to address the immediate needs of the community.
Kingdom Builders’ Bernie Lopez and Koffie owner and master plumber David Chiddick supported the effort and expense for the crew making the trip to San Antonio this weekend. Not only did they bring a trailer full of supplies and plumbing materials to make the necessary repairs for residents, but they have also raised over $10,000 with a Go-Fund-Me Initiative for drywall and painting repairs that these homeowners will be required to undergo.
Rehabilitating existing Shotgun housing stock as a means to mitigate displacement, strengthen personal asset bases and preserve neighborhood character is a departure from traditional strategies to create affordable housing by incentivizing small contractors and lenders to work together to support below-market-rate units.
The successful execution of the Shotgun Houses Rehabilitation Project is critical for a “Proof of Concept” that these innovations are scalable and sustainable.
